The European Commission has put forward an initiative on sustainable fishing in the EU. This initiative consists of a report and a consultation on the implementation of the common fisheries policy.
On one side, the report will assess, in particular:
- progress in achieving sustainable fisheries
- the state of fish stocks
- the implementation of the landing obligation
- the balance between fleet capacity and fishing opportunities.
On the other side, the consultation aims to gather feedback from stakeholders on fishing opportunities for 2024.
The consultation period is ongoing and will close at the end of August 2023. All feedback received will be summarised by the European Commission and presented to the European Parliament and Council with the aim of feeding into the legislative debate.
