European Commission publishes recommendations and good practices for sustainable aquaculture

In a further step towards the development of sustainable aquaculture in Europe, the European Commission has launched a set of recommendations and best practices addressed to Member States. These 3 new documents reinforce the EU’s commitment to the green and blue transition by providing practical tools to improve the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the aquaculture sector.

The recommendations include concrete actions to optimise access to space and water for freshwater and land-based aquaculture, adapt aquaculture to climate change and take the right steps towards the energy transition.

The AquaWind project, a pioneer in combining offshore renewable energy with aquaculture, is perfectly aligned with the priorities set by the European Commission. This type of initiative demonstrates that it is possible to innovate in the sector by optimising marine space with multi-use innovations, as well as promoting sustainability.

At AquaWind, we see these recommendations as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to a more responsible and efficient aquaculture model. In particular, our research and technological development work seeks to be a benchmark in the application of innovative solutions that favour the coexistence between renewable energies and sustainable aquaculture production.

With these guidelines from the European Commission, the path towards a greener and more resilient aquaculture sector is clearer than ever. From AquaWind, we continue to work to lead this change and contribute to a sustainable future for our coasts and oceans.
